The mother, Lillian gives her young daughter instructions on how to be a good person because she was raised that way.This is done as a form of parenting by a writer who loves to write about children. She is also a mother herself, so that is what she focuses on. She is trained as a counselor by way of her PhD, which she earned while at Georgetown University. She has been working with adults for over twenty years.She makes use of many sources, which include direct observation, clinical observation, and testimonials. For example, she states, 'My sister, the author of this essay, did not know what she was feeling until I showed her a drawing that one of the oth er students made. This is true of most people, but it is especially true for creative people.' Her studies show that about fifteen percent of the population has schizophrenia. One in every thirteen children in the United States is believed to have some form of mental illness.There are many writers who write memoirs of childhood and their mother. The Giver by Lois Lowry is one of those writers. She states that she is not sure why she wrote The Giver. She does not know how to explain her feeling that she had to write this book. It just came to her one day when she was looking through her husband's old things.This seems to be the writer's true passion for writing. She writes a great deal of this book in first person. Sometimes there are characters that are in the book that do not make it into the book. One does not always see in books. They seem to be people who do not make much of an impression on the human race. This writer would like to see more people like her. She wants to give them the support that they need.
